There’s a moment on every project when you find out what kind of team you actually have. It’s usually not during the morning meeting or the strategy sessions. It’s later, during a long sweltering Florida summer day when the deadline is bearing down, something unexpected has gone sideways, and the work that needs doing doesn’t fall neatly into anyone’s job description.

That moment showed up for Sharkey Pools recently. And three of our team members answered it the way you hope people will: they just handled it. Together.

Working Next to Each Other vs Working With Each Other

Here’s a distinction I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. Plenty of teams work next to each other. Everyone has their lane, everyone stays in it, and the work gets passed back and forth like a baton. It’s functional. It gets things done. But it also means every handoff is a chance for something to slip through the cracks, and any small gap between roles becomes nobody’s problem.

Working with each other is different. It means someone glances at a piece of the project that technically isn’t theirs and says, “Hey, did we account for this?” It means catching a mistake before it becomes a green pool or a safety hazard, because two sets of eyes were on it instead of one. It means the phrase “that’s not my job” never even enters the conversation, because the job is the project, and the project belongs to everyone on the Sharkey Pools team.

Collaboration Isn’t Just Faster. It’s Smarter.

We tend to talk about teamwork like it’s a productivity hack, a way to divide the labor and get to the finish line quicker. And sure, splitting the load helps. But the real value isn’t speed. It’s judgment and results.

One person catches what the other misses. One person’s blind spot is the other’s strength. Ideas get pressure-tested in real time instead of discovered as problems three weeks later. When collaboration is working, the quality of the thinking improves, not just the pace of the output.

That’s how an “impossible” task or deadline quietly turns into just another Friday. We are reminded of deadlines more so this time of year as the beach communities of Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra prepare for the Independence Day holiday and other critical summer break activities. Not necessarily because the Sharkey Pools team works twice as hard this time of year, but because nobody has to backtrack, redo, or untangle something that a strong team perspective catches the first time around.

What This Means for Our Customers

I’m proud of this crew, a strong team of locals serving their community and doing what is right. Doing the right thing isn’t necessarily difficult, but it does take effort. It means customers can rely on Sharkey Pools to do the right thing, efficiently and proactively.

That last part matters most. Internal wins are nice, but they only really count when the results show up in the customer’s back yard. Strong teams build stronger results, and stronger results are ultimately what people are trusting us to deliver.

So here’s to the kind of teamwork that doesn’t need an org chart to tell it what to do. To stepping up instead of stepping back.
